Eliphalet Nott (1773-1866)
Nott was a clergyman who was president of Union College in Schenectady, New York, for sixty-two years during which time he was able to put the college, which had been sadly in debt, on a sound financial basis with a secure endowment fund, and to give it a strong faculty. In addition to his educational interests, Nott did considerable investigating with the properties of heat that resulted in about thirty patents. He was also an ardent advocate of temperance and of the abolition of slavery.
