John Howard Payne (1791-1852)
Payne was an American actor, playwright, lyricist, editor, and diplomat. At a very early age he was writing and editing theater newspapers. His acting career began in 1809 when he achieved instant fame and toured as Hamlet, Romeo, and other Shakespearean heroes. He is best remembered as the author of the song "Home Sweet Home, from his "Claris." Payne led an eventful life, traveling and living in Europe where he wrote plays and adaptations, but he was always hounded by creditors and was even imprisoned for debt. In the last years of his life, Payne was the American consul to Tunis, Africa.
