George Schneider (1823-1905)
Schneider was a German immigrant, banker, and journalist. He was a supporter of Abraham Lincoln and in 1861 he was appointed American consul at Elsinore, Denmark, primarily to influence the public opinion of Northern Europe in favor of the Union cause. In 1871, he was chosen as the first president of the newly organized Bank of Illinois.
