Benjamin Penhallow Shillaber (1814-1890)
Shillaber was an American humorist, newspaperman, and poet. As editor of the Carpet-Bag, a humorous weekly, he served as the chief connecting link between the old school of American humor, which preceded the Civil War, and the new. Mark Twain sent some of his first contributions to the Carpet-Bag.
