Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882)
Ralph Waldo Emerson was an American lecturer, poet, and essayist, who was the leading figure in the New England Transcendentalist movement. He graduated from Harvard in 1821 and was ordained in the Unitarian ministry in 1829. In 1832 he resigned from the ministry and developed a doctrine of self-sufficiency and self-reliance from his view that the individual need only look into his own heart for spiritual guidance.
