Salmon Portland Chase (1808-1873)
This is a photograph of Salmon P. Chase taken about the time he was a United States senator from Ohio. During his life time, Chase also served as the governor of Ohio, the secretary of the treasury under Abraham Lincoln. He became the chief justice of the United States Supreme Court in 1864 and served until his death in 1873. Chase was a leader in the antislavery movement. As an attorney, he defended runaway blacks so often that he became known as attorney general for fugitive slaves.
