Salmon Portland Chase (1808-1873)
Salmon P. Chase was the governor of Ohio, a United States senator, and the secretary of the treasury under Abraham Lincoln. He became the chief justice of the United States Supreme Court in 1864 and served until his death in 1873. Chase was a leader in the antislavery movement. As an attorney, he defended runaway blacks so often that he became known as attorney general for fugitive slaves.
