Salmon Portland Chase (1808-1873)

This is Salmon P. Chase when he was the Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court. He became the chief justice in 1864 and served until his death in 1873. During his lifetime, Chase served as the governor of Ohio, a United States senator, and the secretary of the treasury under Abraham Lincoln. Chase was a leader in the antislavery movement. As an attorney, he defended runaway blacks so often that he became known as “attorney general for fugitive slaves.”
