Barrett Wendell (1855-1921)
Barrett Wendell was an American educator and man of letters. In 1880 he began teaching at Harvard and in 1898 became the first teacher at that university to offer American literature as an object of systematic historical and critical study. He published "A Literary History of America" in 1900. Barrett's distinguished lectures in England and in France were published in some of his numerous books.
