John Jacob Astor IV (1864-1912)
Astor was an American capitalist and inventor. At the beginning of the Spanish-American War in 1898, he placed his yacht, the Nourmahal, at the disposal of the Navy Department. Astor invented several mechanical devices, including a bicycle brake. He and his wife took passage on the Titanic in 1912. She was rescued, but he drowned.
