Clement Claiborne Clay (1816-1882)
Clement C. Clay was a United States senator from Alabama. When Alabama seceded from the Union, Clay withdrew from Congress and was offered the post of Confederate secretary of war by Jefferson Davis. He declined the appointment and secured it instead for his fellow townsman Leroy Pope Walker. Clay served two years in the Confederate senate and was then part of a secret Confederate mission to Canada. After the assassination of Lincoln, he was arrested and imprisoned for a year, but never convicted of a crime.
