"Taking the Vote on the Impeachment of President Johnson"
This illustration by James E. Taylor from Harper's Weekly depicts the Senate chamber as Edmund Ross, a Republican from Kansas, votes in the foreground. His vote against the impeachment of President Andrew Johnson in 1868 was considered the one vote essential for the PresidentÂ’s acquittal and Ross was vilified by Republicans for his stand.
