Peter Cooper (1791-1883)

Peter Cooper was an American inventor, manufacturer, and philanthropist who built the "Tom Thumb" locomotive and founded the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, New York City. As a member of the Board of Aldermen of New York City, he advocated paid police and firemen, public schools, and improved public sanitation.
