Johnson as Mercutio, Seward as Romeo

This cartoon from the February 1, 1868 issue of Harper's Weekly by Alfred R. Waud depicts President Andrew Johnson as Mercutio, who has been fatally stabbed by two Congressional acts, the "Supreme Court Bill" and "Stanton Reinstated." Secretary of State William Seward, a supporter of the president's policies, is depicted as Romeo leaning over to encourage his dying friend.
