Rutherford B. Hayes (1822-1893)
Rutherford B. Hayes was the 19th President of the United States. He lost the popular vote by a narrow margin to his Democratic opponent Samuel Tilden, but the electoral count in three Southern states was called into question. After four months of stalemate, Southern Democrats were secretly assured that if Hayes was named president, he would end Reconstruction and pull federal troops out of the South. During the Civil War, Hayes rose to the rank of brevet major general.
