Charles Evans Hughes (1862-1948)
Charles Evans Hughes was the governor of New York, secretary of state under Presidents Harding and Coolidge, and the chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court from 1930-41. Hughes was appointed an associate justice of the Supreme Court in 1910, but left the court to run for president in 1916. He lost to Woodrow Wilson in a very close election. Hughes graduated from Columbia law school in New York City in 1884.
