Lucy Bakewell Audubon (d.1874)
Bakewell married the naturalist John James Audubon. Daughter of William Bakewell, she married Audubon in 1808. A tower of strength, she supported her itinerant husband and remained at home to raise their two sons. After his death, Bakewell Audubon survived difficult circumstances and in order to support her family, she was forced to sell Audubon's original watercolors to the New-York Historical Society for $4,000, and to start an art school on their property.
