John Marshall (1755-1835)
John Marshall was the chief justice of the United States Supreme Court and the principal founder of the U.S. system of constitutional law and the doctrine of judicial review. Marshall fought for the colonists during the Revolutionary War and was a congressman from Virginia. He also served briefly as secretary of state under John Adams before his appointment as chief justice.
