John Hipple Mitchell (1835-1905)
John Hipple Mitchell was a Republican U.S. senator from Oregon from 1873-79, 1885-97, and 1901-05. After his election, opponents tried to prevent his seating, charging him with bigamy, desertion, and living under an assumed name, but a Senate committee decided the charges did not merit investigation. At the time of his death, he had been indicted and convicted of having received fees for expediting the land claims of clients before the United States Land Commissioner and an appeal was pending.
