Knute Nelson (1843-1923)

Knute Nelson, a farmer, lawyer and Republican politician, was known as the "Grand Old Man of Minnesota." During the Civil War, he was a corporal in the 4th Wisconsin Infantry regiment. He was wounded and taken prisoner in 1863 in Louisiana. He served as a United States congressman (1882-88), the governor of Minnesota (1892-95) and a United States senator (1895-1923).
