"The Freedmen's Bureau"

This illustration by Alfred Waud originally appeared in the July 25th 1868 issue of Harper's Weekly. It accompanied an editorial that lamented the loss of this federal agency which was formed to aid and protect the newly freed blacks in the South after the Civil War.
