Early Photo Frames
Frames and mattes of early photography collected by Josephine Cobb. Early matting was plain, but after 1855 became fancier. Embossed designs on velvet became popular after 1854. S. Pech invented "union cases" like those shown here, in 1852. "The Tryst" is the image on the union case on the upper right corner; "The Wounded Stag" figures on the case on the far right.
