John A. Logan (1826-1886)
John Alexander Logan was one of the seven major-generals who fought with William Tecumseh Sherman on the famous "March to the Sea" in the Atlanta campaign. He was an Illinois senator and congressman involved in the failed impeachment proceedings against President Andrew Johnson in 1868. Logan was running mate to Republican candidate James G. Blaine in the 1884 presidential campaign won by Democrat Grover Cleveland. He conceived the idea of Memorial Day, and played a major role in organizing the Grand Army of the Republic.
