General Samuel Chapman Armstrong (1839-1893)
Samuel Chapman Armstrong served in the Union army in the Civil War, rising to the rank of major general. After the war as an agent of the Freedmen's Bureau in Virginia, he quickly realized the need for vocational training for emancipated slaves and helped to found the Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute, later called the Hampton Institute. It still exists today as Hampton University. In this photo Armstrong wears a colonel's uniform.
