Brooklyn Bridge Under Construction

The bridge is seen under construction in this view from a tall building near Broadway. Made necessary because of a surge of residential growth in Brooklyn in the 1860s, the Brooklyn Bridge was commenced in 1870. The designer was John Augustus Roebling, and the builder was his son. The great project, the first public bridge to connect Manhattan to the mainland, was completed in 1883.
