Joseph Hooker (1814-1879)
"Fightin Joe" Hooker was a major general in the Union Army. An 1837 graduate of West Point, Hooker served several years in Florida, in the Mexican War, as an adjutant at West Point and as an adjutant general of the Pacific Division. On January 26, 1863, he was named commander of the Army of the Potomac. He was given the thanks of Congress for defending Baltimore and Washington against Lee.
