Thomas Fortune Ryan (1851-1928)
Ryan was a successful financier and capitalist. He was a ruthless businessman whose alliance with the Tammany Hall political machine allowed him to take control of the streetcar and subway lines in New York City. His many business ventures included the American Tobacco Company, the National Bank of Commerce, the Seaboard Air Line Railroad, the Washington Life Insurance Company, the Equitable Life Assurance Society and diamond-, gold-, and copper-mining operations in the Congo.
