Charlemagne Engraving by John Sartain
This depiction of Charlemagne is an engraving on steel by John Sartain (1808-1897) of Philadelphia, the engraver and publisher who introduced pictorial illustration as a distinctive feature of American periodicals. This image was published in "Eclectic" magazine, from the original by the French painter Jean Louis Ernest Meissonier (1815-1891).
