Alexander H. Stephens (1812-1883)
Alexander Hamilton Stephens was the vice-president of the Confederacy. Before the war Stephens favored peace and attended the Hampton Roads Peace Conference. After the war he was arrested and imprisoned for several months. Although elected to the U.S. Senate in 1866 he was not allowed to take his seat. Stephens later served in Congress (1873-82) and was elected governor of Georgia. Here an older Stephens with a crutch is assisted by a black servant.
