James Schoolcraft Sherman (1855-1912)
Sherman served as vice president of the United States in the Taft Administration from 1909 until his death in 1912. He was a lawyer, banker and Republican politician. He served as mayor of Utica, New York (1884) and was a U.S. congressman (1887-91, 1893-1909). While in Congress, he served on the Committee on Indian Affairs and was known for his sympathetic attitude towards Native Americans.
