Mary E. Walker, M.D. (1832-1919)
Dr. Mary Edwards Walker was a physician and woman's rights activist, the only woman physician to serve in the Union Army, and the only woman from the Civil War to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor. Walker insisted on wearing pants rather than a dress for which she was harassed and even arrested for "masquerading in men's clothes." Here Walker poses in "transitional" dress, trousers and a short skirt, with her hair down and flowing loosely around her.
