George Eliphaz Spencer (1836-1893)
George Eliphaz Spencer was a senator, lawyer and Republican politician. He served in the Civil War and helped to found the First Alabama Cavalry. He was brevetted Brigadier General of Volunteers for bravery in the Georgia and Carolinas campaign. He later settled in Alabama and was elected to the U.S. Senate as a Republican from 1868 until 1879. Spencer was a Radical Republican who was labeled a "carpetbagger". He fought for black suffrage and civil rights. Disillusioned with Alabama, he moved to the Dakota and Nevada Territories and concentrated on mining and railroading.
