John Henry Starin (1825-1909)

Starin was a businessman and congressman from New York. He founded the Starin City River and Harbor Transportation Lines and was an innovator in shipping and handling freight. He invented the car float, a method of breaking down a freight train into parts to be easily shipped across the harbor. He was also a member of the New York City Rapid Transit Commission and fought hard to establish the subway system. Starin was elected a U.S. Representative from New York as a Republican and served from 1877 until 1881.
