James Speed (1812-1887)
James Speed was a US attorney general, politician, lawyer and law professor from Kentucky. President Lincoln appointed him attorney general in 1864. Speed resigned from the US cabinet because he felt President Johnson's lack of support for congressional reconstruction undermined the justice department's efforts to protect African Americans.
