Paul Morphy (1837-1884)
Young Paul Morphy became the best chess player in the world. From New Orleans, he entered the national scene by winning the 1857 First American Chess Congress. In Europe he easily defeated its best players. When Morphy returned to the U.S., he was a national hero.
