William O. Stoddard (1835-1925)

William O. Stoddard was one of President Lincoln's three private secretaries (1861-64). Lincoln liked "Stod" and took him along on visits to Secretary of State Seward and General McClellan. Lincoln later appointed him U.S. Marshal in Arkansas. Stoddard was a prolific writer, the author of many children's books and several books on Lincoln and the White House.
