Eli Thayer (1819-1899)
Eli Thayer was a Republican U.S. congressman from 1857-61. Thayer was a member of the Massachusetts state house of representatives in 1853 and 1854 and while in the legislature secured a charter, originated, and organized the New England Emigrant Aid Company, which had for its purpose the sending out of an advance colony of antislavery settlers to Kansas. He graduated from Brown University at Providence in 1845.
