William Henry Vanderbilt (1821-1885)

William Henry Vanderbilt was the son of financier Cornelius Vanderbilt who became the head of a railway trust and was strongly opposed to government regulation of the railway industry. He was given control of the Staten Island Railroad in 1857, he was named vice-president of the New York and Harlem Railroad in 1864, acquired other railways, and became president of the New York Central Railroad in 1877.
