Barbara Freitchie (1766-1862)
Barbara Freitchie was immortalized by John Greenleaf Whittier's poem which took her name. The poem describes an incident that occurred in Frederick, Maryland, where a woman defended her American flag before Confederate troops led by Stonewall Jackson.
