Harriet Hosmer (1830-1908)
Harriet Goodhue Hosmer was one of the greatest sculptors in American history. She was an unorthodox and ambitious woman who lived in Italy. Despite condescending attitudes toward her smaller pieces, Hosmer created several magnificent life-sized marble sculptures of tragic heroines. Her neoclassic "Sleeping Faun" (1865) was acclaimed for the muscular strength of the young man. The first American sculptor to receive a commission in a Roman church, Hosmer outshone her contemporaries in her artistic and technical talent.
