Benjamin Alvord (1813-1884)
Benjamin Alvord graduated from West Point in 1833 and was commissioned in the 4th Infantry where he served almost continuously for 21 years. During the Civil War he was chief paymaster of Oregon and was brevetted brigadier general. Alvord was paymaster general of the army from 1872-80. He wrote several significant mathematical and botanical papers.
