Adelbert Ames (1835-1933)

Adelbert Ames was the governor of Mississippi from 1874-76 and a Republican U.S. senator from 1870-74. During the Civil War he served with the Union Army from 1861-65 as lieutenant, colonel, and brigadier general. He received the Congressional Medal of Honor for gallantry at the Battle of Bull Run. Ames graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1861. In this photo Ames, seated with a dog at his feet, is a brigadier general. The log cabin - instead of a tent - suggests this was winter camp, 1863-64.
