Hartman Bache (1798-1872)
Hartman Bache participated in the construction of lighthouses, defenses, railroads, and canals, before being named head of the Bureau of Topographical Engineers in 1861. Bache served throughout the Civil War in engineering and lighthouse duty in the East and upon his retirement in 1867 he received the brevet promotion of brigadier general.
