Amos Beckwith (1825-1894)

Amos Beckwith began his Civil War service as a first lieutenant in the 1st U.S. Artillery. He later served as chief commissary of subsistence for the Washington Depot and for Sherman's army. Beckwith was promoted to brevet brigadier general for "gallant & meritorious services in the campaign terminating with the surrender of the insurgent army under General Joseph E. Johnston." Finally, he was promoted to brevet major general of U.S. Volunteers for his service in the Subsistence Department. He was an 1850 graduate of the United States Military Academy. He retired as a Colonel in the Regular Army in 1889.
