David Davidson Bidwell (1819-1864)

David Davidson Bidwell was active in Buffalo's prewar militia and instrumental in organizing the city's first police force and was a police justice at the outbreak of the Civil War. Bidwell helped raise the 49th New York Volunteers and was named its colonel. He was promoted to Brigadier General, but killed in action on October 19, 1864 at the Battle of Cedar Creek, Virginia.
