William Birney (1819-1907)
William Birney was educated at four colleges, including Yale University, and graduated from Cincinnati Law School in 1841. He spent five years in Europe where he took part in the French Revolution of 1848 and was a professor of English literature at Bourges. Birney helped expedite emancipation in Maryland by recruiting slaves into seven black regiments which he led as a Brigadier General. He was brevetted Major General.
