Louis Blenker (1812-1863)
Louis Blenker was born in Germany and was a leading member of the revolutionary government there in 1848. He came to New York after the revolution failed. At the outbreak of the Civil War he organized the 8th regiment of New York volunteers, of which he was commissioned colonel. Blenker was promoted to Brigadier General and died in 1863 as a result of injuries received in a fall from his horse earlier in the war.
