John Brown Meets a Slave Mother and Her Child
This painting by Louis Ransom was issued as a lithograph during the Civil War by Currier & Ives. It depicts John Brown compassionately greeting a slave-mother and her child on the steps of Charleston jail on his way to execution. A statue of justice, with its arms and scales broken, stands forgotten behind the railing at left.
