James J. Byrne (1841-1880)
James J. Byrne was a Union soldier who first served with the 163rd New York as 1st Lieutenant and adjutant and later was Colonel of the 18th New York Cavalry. He was brevetted Brigadier General and Major General, U.S. Volunteers. He was killed by Indians in 1880 while he was an employee of the Texas and Pacific Railway. He was born in Ireland.
