Joseph Alexander Cooper (1823-1910)
Joseph Alexander Cooper was a farmer in Tennessee who secretly recruited Union sympathizers and moved them to Kentucky to be sworn into service. He was selected as Captain of the 1st Tennessee and later was promoted to Colonel of the 6th Tennessee. Cooper would also be named Brigadier General and Brevet Major General, U.S. Volunteers.
